Shiatsu is an amazing healing art originating in Japan. Authentic Shiatsu is not only relaxing & gentle, but is also a therapeutic technique that's been healing people for thousands of years.
Originally from Tokyo, I was successful in providing substantial relief for many people over my 10 years' Shiatsu practice in Japan, and that experience yields great confidence in my technique to this day.
I moved to magical Queenstown in 2012 to practice at Nadi Wellness Centre for several years where I was well known for the unique & highly effective solutions that only authentic Shiatsu can offer.
As much as I loved Queenstown & still miss my clients there, our growing family decided to move to Algie's Bay where we are very happy & thriving.

What is Shaitsu?

Shiatsu is a healing art originating in Japan that uses the power of touch and pressure to enable each of us to contact our own abilities for self-healing. In a Shiatsu session the practitioner uses pressure with his thumbs, fingers, palms, and sometimes elbows, knees, feet, to induce deep relaxation a feeling of well-being. It is sometimes a dynamic, sometimes a more static form of therapy, involving pressure on and stretching of the limbs and torso, kneading and releasing tight muscles, and supporting areas of weakness.
Shiatsu works upon the body’s energetic system using the network of meridians or energy pathways that relate to the functioning of the internal organs as well as our emotional, psychological, and spiritual harmony.Energy, known as Qi, causing blockags of dams in some areas, and weaknesses or stagnant pools in otheres. These blockages or weaknesses in turn may lead to physical symptoms, to psychological or emotional disturbances, or simply to a feeling that “thngs are just not quite right.”
Shiatsu uses physical pressure and meridian stretches to unblock to dams – which show up as tight muscles and areas of stiffness – and revitalize the empty areas – which may feel cold, weak, or just needing to be held. Oriental medical theory provides a framework by which the practitionaer can assess the body’s energetic state and needs, and can explain why the body holds tension in certain areas or points and feels weak in others.
Prevention and Treatment
Like othere natural healing and alternative therapies, Shiatsu is concerned with preventative measures. Shiatsu keeps the body healthy, flexible, and in balance, as well monitoring energetic changes that may be precursors of sickness. In the oriental view, an imbalance of Qi develops before the symptoms of illness occur. Regular Shiatsu treatment can help to pinpoint any patterns of imbalance in the body’s Qi stucture by ironing out those disturbances before they become entrenched. In the case of people already suffering from health problem, Shiatsu can be great benefit, both as a discipline in its own right and in concert with other complementary and orthodox treatments. The physical and psychological release obtained during Shiatsu can make life more comfortable and in some cases can make it bearable.
Shiatsu can help
Headaches, migraine, acute and chronic back pain(especially if of muscular origin), sciatica, muscular stiffness asand injuries, some forms of arthritis, and rheumatic complaints. Working as it does on the body’s internal organs, Shiatsu can also have a role in the treatment of digestive and intestinal disorders and circulatory, respiratory, and reproductive problems. Because Shiatsu works on relaxing the body at a deep level contacting the more subltle aspects of one’s energetic makeup, it can also help in the treatment of anxiety, tension, depression, and emotional instability.

Acupuncture and Shiatsu are called Preventive Medicine, which cures “future illness” according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is ideal to maintain your body by having a monthly treatment no matter how well you feel. There can be unnoticed stiffness somewhere in the body that can easily develop without treatment and will cause illness in the future, so for maximum health & vitality it is best to get your condition checked by a therapist regularly.
I recommend regular Shiatsu treatment in the early stage to help bring out and maintain spontaneous healing. For example, it is ideal to have treatment once a week for the first month, then once per fortnight for next two months, and once a month after three months.
A treatment plan can vary depending on individual wellness status and how much a client can achieve. There are no hard and fast rules, and the frequency of treatment depends on the individual's needs. Some people get better after having a 30 minute treatment each week while others get better after having a 60 minute treatment each month. In my experience, having a treatment once per fortnight is the most appropriate choice for the majority of my clients.

FAQs
Q: Will I have to undress?
A: No. You will be asked to remove your shoes, keep your socks on, and to remove any bulky clothing like a sweater and a pair of jeans. It will be helpful to wear something stretchy or loose fitting, and skirts are not ideal. For your convenience, I have loose fitting clothes for rent at my clinic – please ask.
Q:How painful will it be during Shiatsu treatment?
A: It is not supposed to be painful, as I carefully adjust the pressure to ensure comfort during
treatment. However, some people might feel pain at some trigger points of symptoms – please feel free to tell me if the pressure is too strong.
Q: Is there anything that I need to be aware after the treatment?
A: Yes. It is best to avoid doing hard exercise. Drinking alcohol is not recommended, due to improved circulation of blood you will get drunk quicker. Taking a bath and doing some stretch in a tub is ideal for longer lasting benefits.
Q:Is a mobile Shiatsu treatment available?
A: Yes. Depending on urgency of symptoms, such as strained back, cricked neck, other symptoms being unable to move, a house call is available (a visit fee will apply). If requiring immediate treatment, I can be available on call 24 hours (additional charge may occur).
Q: Is there a problem if I have a treatment right after a meal?
A: Yes. After a meal, the digestive system works hard and a great amount of blood goes to this area to help digestion. Shiatsu promotes blood circulation all over the body and will therefore restrict the amount of blood to digestive system. It is strongly recommended to take at least an hour break after a meal before treatment.
Q: Is Shiatsu effective for PMS (Pre Menstrual Syndromes) ?
A: Yes. I have treated people suffering from PMS. Symptoms are often alleviated by Shiatsu treatment, which regulates the automotive nerve system.
Q: Can a pregnant woman have a Shiatsu treatment?
A: Yes. However, treatment could be limited depending on stage of pregnancy. Shiatsu is very effective for pregnant women who have tight shoulders, back pain, hip joint pain, knee pain, etc. caused by physical and hormonal changes. At treatment, instructions for stretching and exercise will be provided for self-treatment. For those who have morning sickness, it is best to wait until the second trimester.
Q: How soon can I have a Shiatsu treatment after giving birth?
A: I strongly recommend having treatment one month after childbirth. The pelvis needs a good rest to get back to its original shape, and the range of treatment will be very limited before this period. After childbirth, postnatal women tend to be in a bad posture, walk awkwardly and have back pain. Some complain about the pelvis not getting back to its original shape. All of these conditions occur because of declined function around the pelvis and weakened abdominal muscles. If you have a treatment earlier, you will recover in shorter period of time. Shiatsu helps return stability to the pelvis area. Postnatal woman tends to be busy looking after her baby, and has a limited time to look after herself. She can have tight shoulders, and upper and lower back pain, due to a bad posture between the upper and lower back. Shiatsu treatment can help alleviate this.
Q: What is the “healing crisis (cleansing reaction)” ?
A: Some people feel weariness and some even feel worse after their first Shiatsu treatment. This symptom is called the healing crisis or cleansing reaction, which occurs when the body recovers spontaneously. It is a similar sensation to muscle pain caused by excess massage, and this symptom will settle in around three days and you will feel amazingly better afterwards. While you are experiencing healing crisis, it is best to drink plenty of water and have a good rest until metabolic wastes are flushed from your body.
Q: Can Shiatsu treatment improve the natural state of my body?
A: It has been said that Shiatsu treatment only gives temporary relief of uncomfortable symptoms, but recent studies of Brain Science have shown this to be wrong. According to studies, the body can learn to return to its natural state through Shiatsu treatment. Our brains and body can memorise comfortable state brought by Shiatsu treatment, and they try to be in this state because it is easy and natural – this is how spontaneous healing works. Spontaneous healing will work best with proper diagnosis and regular treatment.
Q: How often should I stretch each a day?
A: Stiffness of muscles cannot be loosened by a few minutes of stretching before going to bed and it is best to do it as often as you can throughout the day. For example, doing one minute stretch every hour is more effective than doing ten minutes stretch before going to bed. This also helps you check your posture and breathing throughout the day.
Q: Which method is more effective, chiropractic that adjusts the bones or Shiatsu that works on the muscles?
A: Although it depends on the circumstances, working on muscles often has higher priority, because bones tend to go back to the wrong positions, pulled by the tight muscles that surround them after the chiropractic treatment. Bones aligned by chiropractic will last longer if the muscles are well loosened beforehand through Shiatsu treatment.
However, there might be no need to work on bone alignment: the bones are usually set in a correct position, if the muscles are in a good condition. Shiatsu can help you achieve good muscle condition.
